This top 10 movies list could be easily trumped if the new Star Wars movie was being released in 2016 as opposed to this past week, but since it is not, let’s take a look at what should be the top movies for 2016. This is a big year for remakes, comics and science fiction.
#10: Finding Dory
The first Finding Nemo movie made about $864 million when it was released in 2003. Consider this: that was a time where 3D was not in theaters as well. Take into account inflation and its sales from the 3D release a few years ago, and we are looking around $1.2 billion dollars for this film. Currently, Frozen ranks in the #1 animation motion picture list with Minions in 2nd place. The real question: can Finding Dory surpass them?
From a marketing perspective, this seems like the perfect time for Finding Dory to be released. This gives an opportunity for millennials to tap into nostalgia and reflect back on their childhood. I can hear cousin Tommy yelling in the theater, “Back in my day, we loved Finding Nemo…” Is that enough to capture this audience while attempting to reel in the newest generation? Always tough to outdo the original, but I think this has some legs (and maybe some fins too).
#9: The Jungle Book
Disney sticks to its anniversary collection and brings back the Jungle Book near the summer of 2016. An original 1967 film, the Jungle Book will now be in Blue Ray for the first time according to Disney. The characters including Baloo, Bagheera, King Louie, Shere Khan, Kaa and Mowgli remain as the storyline remain the same. Expect a big change in the quality of video. View the official US teaser trailer here.
Other features that appear to be coming for this film include 3D live-animation and will be released in Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D on April 15th, 2016.
Not many video games can hang with the big name box office films on a typical weekend but with the cult following of World of Warcraft (WoW), this might stand a chance to make the top 10 movies of 2016. We listed it at number eight because it could be just as well a flop as it could be a success. There are some prominent names in the film, such as Paula Patton and Travis Fimmel, which could bring their fan clubs along as well. The mystery of what the plot and storyline is most intriguing about this sci-fi film.
When watching the trailer, you get the feeling that there should be a lot of differences between humans and orcs due to the emphasis of both the Alliance’s and Horde’s sides of the conflict. A lot of WoW followers want to know which characters they will choose to feature. The trailer above reveals Durotan and Lothar featured in locations that are frequently mentioned and used during the video game series.
Release: June 10th, 2016
#7: X-Men: Apocalypse
As a non-sci-fi fanatic, I have to recognize greatness where possible and the fact that the X-Men franchise can continue to produce winners at the box office, including last year’s $748 million grossing. Our feeling is that the more that you produce, you can either acquire more brand loyalty or lose it – a lot is on the line for the franchise.
Marvel Studios should expect to see similar numbers at the box office. It will be successful and Marvel has been killing it of late. Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War are expected to add to that success. Will they make top 5? You’ll have to see below.
#6: Independence Day: Resurgence
Nearly two decades later, this sequel to the first Independence Day invasion, could potentially rank higher on our list had it brought back Academy Award nominee Will Smith. Since it doesn’t, it is still worth noting. Its star studded cast featuring names like Liam Hemsworth (Hunger Games) and Vivica A. Fox (Independence Day, Batman & Robin, Kill Bill).
Releasing right before Independence Day in the United States, one has to wonder if this might spark a little fear into the average American during the holiday, will this movie be a foreshadowing of alien technology overtaking the earth? Let’s hope not.
#5: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Written by famous writer of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, this movie is based seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school. This has the most intriguing storyline because a lot of readers will follow J.K. Rowling in whichever series she creates next, however, the intrigue really lies in whether this series can capture a new audience on top?
Filled with a cast like Colin Farrell, Jon Voight and some new faces, how much legs does this series have under it? Only time will tell. One of the most intriguing movies to watch in November 2016.
#4: Alice through the Looking Glass
The sequel to the Disney classic Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway star as Alice heads back to Wonderland to save the Mad Hatter. Surprisingly, many might not know that this is a “modern adaptation of the classic children’s story written by Lewis Carroll”.
The storyline according to IMDB.com, “When Alice wakes up in Wonderland she must travel through a mysterious new world to retrieve a magical scepter that can stop the evil Lord of Time before he turns forward the clock and turns Wonderland into a barren, lifeless old world. With the help of some new friends, Alice must also uncover an evil plot to put the Queen of Hearts back on the throne.”
A star-studded cast, a great storyline, what more could you want? You can expect this movie to hit around Memorial Day 2016.
#3: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Star Wars is the perfect film series but its fans continue to want more.
“What have you done for me lately?”
For one, two movies in a 12-month period is pretty impressive for any series, let alone the Star Wars franchise. Per usual, Star Wars does not release much information about what the next movie is going to be about. The only thing we know is that the “Rebels set out on a mission to steal the plans of the Death Star”.
For some, that might be just enough to peak their interest for next December’s release. This franchise has been well received in 2015 and the bar has been raised.
Keep your eyes peeled, it should make everyone’s top 10 movies of 2016. This will be a good one.
#2: Captain America: Civil War
So I have to admit, I have had a crush on Scarlett Johansson since I was a teenager, so I might be a little biased. But bias aside, Captain America and Ironman in the same film with a title like Civil War?
It is bound to intrigue us all.
So what’s the storyline? Here’s the IMDB version:
“After another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps, one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.”
Once you get past both actors chiseled abs and you notice that Ant-Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye are also in the film, you will get excited. It is one you will have to see in theaters unless you have some excellent surround sound at home.
Its May 6th, 2016 release is perfect for the start of summer and what better way than with a little Marvel drama.
#1: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Bound to be one of the most anticipated movies in Q1 of 2016, had this not been announced as a movie, Captain America: Civil War would have taken the cake. Hard to compete with Batman vs Superman for a couple reasons:
- Ben Affleck is starring as Batman for the first time
- A new Alfred (Jeremy Irons) and Lois Lane (Amy Adams)
- Appearances by Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor
This almost has the feeling of the movie Batman: Dark Knight. The setting seems to be dark. Batman and Superman, two of some of the best vigilantes, are trying to convince the world what type of hero it needs to have. As they go against each other, the plot looks to be that a new Doomsday is on the rise. After all, if Batman and Superman can’t combine to do more good for a community, would that not mean that the world is ending? That along with many other items that are portrayed here in the trailer leave a lot to question and curiosity to linger with its fan following.
The movie is expected for release on March 25th, 2016.
